The science behind affirmations

Amira de Jong Another frequency spiritual mindset coach

I always knew affirmations were powerful, but the other day I heard Dr. Bruce Lipton talk about our subconscious and how it affects our daily life. This blew my mind and I knew I wanted to dive into this deeper and really get to know the reason why affirmations work as well as they do (when used correctly).

95% of our life is determined by our subconscious programs. Your consciousness (thoughts and feelings) only make up 5(!)% of your day to day life. How insane is that? We learn these subconscious programs in the first 7 years of our life. We are in a ‘hypnosis’ state up until we are 7. This means that, during these years, our brain is in a lower vibrational state called ‘theta’. In this state, it’s easier for our brain to pick up on the programs that are needed to survive in this life. You watch your parents, family, friends, etc. Your direct environment has a deep effect on your subconscious programs and therefore, how you live the rest of your life.

In the book ‘Rich dad, poor dad’ Robert T. Kiyosaki talks about how when you come from a poor family, you can struggle and try your whole life, but you’ll never be rich. And when you come from a rich family, you can be stupid your whole life and still make it. Because that is what unconscious programs do. If you get the program ‘We’ll never be rich’, ‘You’ll never make it’, ‘Life is hard’, well then 95% of the time you’ll be sabotaging yourself, no matter how hard you try. That is how poor people stay poor and rich people stay rich; it’s because of the programming.

Recognize where you struggle

I can hear you thinking: ‘how do I fix my programming?!’. Well, this is where the power of affirmations comes in. First, you need to recognize where you struggle. The things you like, come into your life because you have a program that supports that. The parts in your life where you struggle, where you have to work really hard to make it happen, that probably has a program that does not support the direction you want to go in.

Creating new programs

So how can you change the program that keeps you struggling? The conscious mind learns in many ways; listening to a podcast, reading a book, watching a video, listening to a teacher or reading this blog for example. The conscious mind will create some awareness from these things, but the subconscious doesn’t learn that way.

There are 2 ways the subconscious can learn:

  1. Hypnosis (the first 7 years or your life)
  2. Repetition and practice

It’s the same way you learn to drive a car, or become good at a videogame or how you learn to play any instrument; repetition and practice.

The power of affirmations

By constantly repeating a certain phrase like: “I’m happy” or “I am a positive thinker”, you’re talking to your subconscious. If your subconscious hears this phrase over and over again, it will eventually take this and it’ll become automatic. But you have to practice this religiously. Repeat it over and over and over. It has to become a habit. And there is a difference between reading something and saying it in your head and actually speaking it out loud. The first one is a suggestion, it doesn’t really work. The second one will help you change your subconscious programs.

Something that is also very important is that you make the phrase identity based. Start the affirmation with “I am..”. Because, when you take on a different identity, you will then (unconsciously) start to create habits that support that identity. So for example, when you say “I am fit & healthy and I live a healthy lifestyle”, your brain will start to look for evidence that this is true. It will create habits like: going for a walk, eating a salad instead of fries, getting enough sleep and getting up early. You’ll start to make more healthy decisions, because you are changing your identity. And this actually ties in with the contents of the book ‘Atomic Habits’ by James Clear. Your identity creates habits that create results, not the other way around like most people try to do.

Challenge

So here’s a challenge for you. Create one affirmation, just one, and say this out loud as many times as you can throughout the day for 30 days. If you need reminders (like me) write it on a few sticky notes and place these around the house. Everytime you see one of these sticky notes you say the phrase out loud. Stick them on places you come often or things you use a lot, like your laptop, bathroom mirror, journal, etc. Watch how your life changes.

As I’m writing this I’m  seeing the angel number 1234, which just so happens to mean that you are ready to let go of past beliefs and patterns that no longer serve you, how aligned is that? If you want to know more about angel numbers, you can read about it here. (link)

Let me know in the comments or on my instagram/tiktok if you’ve tried this and what the results were. I can’t wait to see what happens!

Lots of love,

Amira

Then change the energy by changing the negative into something positive. Lastly, create affirmations with these, now positive, sentences and repeat these as many times as you can (out loud) throughout the day.
